YOUR ROLE AS A PARENT

PARENT INVOLVEMENT - parents are always welcome and encouraged to participate with their child in the programme. There are a number of ways for parents to help our (How YOU can Help). As a pre-requisite of accepting adult help the Scout Association requires a simple confidential enquiry to be carried out and you will be given a CRB/CBS form to complete. We hope you will appreciate and feel reassured by this safeguard.

MEETINGS - Parents can help by ensuring their child arrives on time for the start of a meeting and is picked up promptly at the close. The Leader will advise parents of any alteration to timing due to activities. The young people should arrive at meetings in Uniform with suitable footwear. The Leader will advise parents of any special clothing and for equipment that may be needed for particular activities. Please bring your child inside the meeting place on arrival and again come in to collect at the close. It is important that Leaders know your child is safe on arrival and departure.

SCOUTING IS A FAMILY BASED ORGANISATION - Activities we offer plus the values and skills we provide, are aimed at supporting your efforts to teach your child what is needed to become a well-rounded person. Your personal involvement is important to help reinforce the lessons your child learns. Here are some suggestions to help you become involved.

  • Sit down with your child and look through the activities on offer, what activities do you find interesting or appealing, could you work on these as a family?

  • Find out what activities Leaders are planning and offer your help.

  • Get to know Leaders by their real names. Too often parents know only the Scouting names. Leaders are truly interested in your child's welfare. Tell them what your child likes and dislikes if they have a particular difficulty, this will be of help when programme planning.

  • If your child is interested in working on an activity outside the meeting or you want to make it a family project talk over the plans with the Leader. They can provide useful tips and encouragement, and will set the standard required for achievement.

  • Your talents, hobbies and interests are a great programme asset worth sharing with children. Find out how you can become a resource for the programmes. This will let you share valuable time with your child and enjoy the experience. The children in the younger sections really enjoy it when a family member attends a meeting it gives them a sense of pride.

  • Don't forget when your child becomes a member of a Scout Group you become part of that Group’s Support Team.

  • Leadership. The Scout Association offers training, support and resources. Leadership is fun. You can help the development of young people as well as find friendship and camaraderie with others.
